The publisher of a newspaper dedicated to beer, BarleyCorn, wanted a map of the area covered by the paper, roughly the Chesapeake Bay area to run as the centerfold of every issue. The map was to have an antique feel. The hill symbols were redrawn from old European maps while the city symbols, hashmarks of varying sizes, were taken from the maps of one of the most famous American cartographers, Erwin Raisz.
