Map of the Middle East

This map illustrates the travels of Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Abdallah, the name taken by Swiss adventurer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (b. 1784). Burckhardt travelled throughout Arabia as a Muslim scholar, and is said to have been the first European to enter the walled city of Petra. The map employs a typeface based on handwriting of the time and symbols from historic maps of the same period.
