For the Climate Council, Australia’s leading climate change communications organisation, we have pulled together information from the states and territories in an effort to show the potential scale of gas production in Australia. The map shows the 1859 areas, or “tenements”, that state and territory governments have provided or are considering providing to gas companies to look for and produce gas.
Read the Climate Council explainer and explore the interactive map. Or see how news.com.au covered the new map.
The initial views, at the national and state scales, show the tenements with their permit names and numbers. Pushing closer into the map reveals the Australian Marine Parks and, where the land or section of ocean has already been handed to a gas company, the names of the permit holders.
